Inclusion leadership Stakeholders meeting in Kigoma
Wed, 24-Jul-2024
During
the stakeholders meeting, various views and perceptions were shared regarding
the participation of women, youth and people with disabilities in elections
and leadership positions. Participants noted that while there has been progress
in encouraging these groups to engage in political processes, significant gaps
remain.
Women, in particular, were often viewed as capable leaders, but
traditional gender roles and societal norms still hinder their full
participation. Some community members expressed that women were sometimes seen
as secondary to men in leadership roles, despite their qualifications and
potential contributions.
Youth
participants highlighted a growing awareness and interest in political
engagement, driven by social media and education. However, they also noted a
lack of trust in the political system, feeling that their voices are often
disregarded. Young people expressed a desire for more inclusive and transparent
governance structures that genuinely consider their perspectives. They stressed
the importance of role models and mentors in motivating and guiding them
towards political involvement.
For people with disabilities, the meeting
revealed mixed perceptions. While some recognized the need for inclusivity,
others viewed people with disabilities as less capable of participating in
leadership due to physical or logistical challenges. This perspective often
stemmed from a lack of awareness and understanding of the capabilities of
people with disabilities. Participants emphasized the need to challenge these
stereotypes and ensure that electoral processes are accessible to all,
including those with disabilities.
